“Pastoral Dreamer”

Internationally collected contemporary sculptor, David Phelps grew up on a farm in California. After graduating from Humboldt State University, David moved to Oklahoma to attend graduate school. He lives and works in Oklahoma City. His work can be seen throughout the country in public and private collections.

Phelps’ figurative bronze sculpture is three times life-size. His monumental work is serenely contemplative and imbued with a dry, subtle sense of humor. Although he creates large and small scale pieces, his sculptures evoke reaction no matter the proportion. The imagery of his figurative bronze sculpture is rooted in his early years growing up on the family farm.

“Pastoral Dreamer” depicts a man relaxing, partially submerged in the ground, at a length of 17 feet. By combining opposites, he can infuse his art with the power of that tension. This imagery is strengthened because the viewer has to put the image together. This limited edition sculpture was selected by the Art in Public Places Initiative to be placed along 133rd street (in south Leawood) to be enjoyed by families and the children attending the nearby elementary school.
