Business / Occupational Licenses

Any person, engaging in a business, trade, or profession that provides any service within Leawood city limits, is required by City Ordinance, to obtain an Occupation License before they can open for business. This includes businesses located in other cities working in Leawood. The City of Leawood licenses are valid for one year, commencing on the first of July and expiring on the 30th of June in each year, and must be renewed by each year thereafter. Information on licensing fees is available by contacting the Licensing Clerk at (913) 663-9123.

License renewals notices will be emailed the last week of May; are considered delinquent after June 30th and are subject to additional fines. The City maintains a database which lists all pertinent information relating to the business. It is the responsibility of the business owner to update CITIZENSERVE WEBSITE with current company, name, address, phone number, and email address.  Change in ownership requires the NEW OWNER to create their own account.

To apply for an Occupation License in the City of Leawood, you will need to fill out an application and remit the appropriate fee for your type of business on CITIZENSERVE link.  The fee is prorated from the opening date. The fee for ALL contractors (including but not limited to building, remodeling, curbing, street grading, street paving, sewer, electrical, plumbing, roofing & landscaping) is $60.00 per year.

The following information is needed to complete the application:

• Legal and common name (d/b/a: doing business as)
• Street and mailing address (if mailing address is different)
• Business, fax and cell phone numbers
• Type and nature of business (i.e., type of contractor, retail, restaurant, accountant)
• Retail & Manufacturing businesses: Total square footage of the business if physically located within the City limits of Leawood
• Certain types/categories of businesses: Number of full-time employees
• Federal Tax I.D. #: Each business with a separate Federal ID# (providing a service or product in Leawood city limits) MUST apply for a license.
• CONTRACTORS ONLY: An active, and CURRENT Johnson County license; General, Building, Residential, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, roofing, swimming pool and wood framing contractors.
• ROOFING CONTRACTORS: Kansas State License is required.

Some businesses are exempt from obtaining a city Occupational license, and therefore, the City Clerk may require anyone claiming to be exempt to file a verified statement of fact.

Applying for or Renewing a Business/Occupational License

To apply or to renew a license, follow the steps below to setup your license in Citizenserve.

Apply for Your License / Renewal

1. Go to our online portal: https://www.citizenserve.com/leawood
2. Click APPLY FOR A LICENSE under Online Services.
3. Click REGISTER NOW on the right and create your account.
4. Select Business / Occupation License as your application type. Click renewal.
5. Fill out the rest of the application and click submit.

Upon review and approval of your application, you will be notified by email the fee amount & you will PAY ONLINE.

The license certificate will be available after payment has been processed for you to print or to download/save.

Pay for Your License

1. Log in to the online portal: https://www.citizenserve.com/leawood.
2. Under Services, View License, License tab and Click on credit card icon Make a payment.
3. Enter in credit card information and submit.

You will receive an e-mail stating that your license has been generated.

Retrieve Your License

1. Log in to the online portal: https://www.citizenserve.com/leawood.
2. Go to Services, View License, Documents tab
3. Click on Business Certificate.pdf. It will pull up the business license and allow you to print it.
