Electronics Recycling Day

Do you want to get rid of your old computer?
Maybe your stereo, scanner or personal printer?

ewasteThe City of Leawood is teaming up with the City of Overland Park in hosting their annual
Electronics Recycling Day
Saturday, April 25, 2009
8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Shawnee Mission South High School
5800 W. 107th St.
(between Nall and Lamar)

Residents can bring their unwanted electronics to this collection event.

There is no charge to recycle computer CPUs, keyboards, mice, VCRs, stereos, scanners and personal printers. Charges of $10 to $25 will apply to computer monitors, televisions and large printers.

To recycle 10 or more computers, contact Surplus Exchange at 816/472-0444 to schedule a pickup at your location.

Some of the collected equipment will be inspected, reconditioned and reused whenever possible. Obsolete or non-working equipment will be disassembled and the components recycled*.

Over the past four years, Overland Park has sponsored several recycling events and netted more than 407,000 pounds of unwanted electronics, including more than 2,800 monitors and 2,250 printers.

Why recycle your electronics?

ewaste2Currently, only a small percentage of electronic devices are recycled.

Electronic devices can contain significant amounts of hazardous or toxic substances.

Cathode ray tubes found in most computer monitors and TVs contain significant amounts of lead while other equipment may contain mercury, cadmium, chromium and other heavy metals. When electronic devices are disposed of, these pollutants may pose environmental risks.

Volunteers are needed! Please contact Julie Stasi at julies@leawood.org; 913-339-6700, x133 [CITY OF LEAWOOD]. Or, for more information, contact Jim Twigg, Environmental Programs Coordinator, at 913/895-6273 [CITY OF OVERLAND PARK]. * NOTE: All electronics collected by the city are handled by companies that are certified by the Basel Action Network.
